PV annual growth

An Annual Increase of 600GW of Photovoltaics

According to the assumptions of the United Nations Climate Conference, if the world wants to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, then the short-term goal before 2030 is to achieve a renewable energy installed capacity of 11 terawatts, of which solar power is about 5800GW, wind power is about 3300GW, hydropower is about 1400GW. The target is similar to BNEF's previous target for renewable energy to achieve net zero emissions, especially solar power, which was previously expected to be 5,750 GW and is almost identical in both models.

According to the author's statistics, as of 2022, the global cumulative solar power installed capacity is about 1200GW, 2023 is generally expected to add 400GW, and then, in the remaining seven years the world will add 4200GW of solar power, an average annual increase of 600GW.

From the past 20 years of photovoltaic development history, it can be understood that the exponential growth expectations of the market for photovoltaic power generation always make people feel unimaginable, and the growth data always make the market expectations lag again and again. According to the current growth rate of photovoltaic installed capacity, the annual increase of 600GW is very likely to be renewed.

At their recent meeting in San Francisco, the presidents of the United States and China stressed the importance of accelerating efforts to address the climate crisis in the next critical decade, supported tripling the world's installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, and welcomed the positive discussions recently held by the two climate envoys, including Domestic emission reduction actions in the 2020s, jointly contribute to the success of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Dubai (COP28), and launch the US-China Working Group on Enhanced Climate Action in the 2020s to accelerate concrete climate actions.

In December 2020, China proposed at the World Climate Ambition Conference that it would complete 1,200GW wind and solar power installations by 2030.  On November 15, 2023, the sixth China International Photovoltaic Industry Conference, the world's first "2023 China and Global Photovoltaic Development White Paper" pointed out that according to the current development rate, China by 2030, fully able to achieve the national 2030 to complete the task of more than 1200GW, and in the "above" this expectation to do better.  Achieve better development.
