Automatic Transfer Switch(ATS Switch)

It is automatically connected to the standby power supply through the dual power switch when the power is suddenly cut off so that our operation will not stop and can continue to operate. The purpose of the dual power automatic switch is simply to use all the way standby, when the common power sudden failure or power failure, through the dual power switch, automatically put into the standby power, (small load standby power can also be powered by the generator) so that the equipment can still operate normally.

The automatic switch is called ATS for short. An ATS consists of two parts: a switch body and a controller. The switch body has the difference between PC (Power Contactor) and CB (circuit breaker).

1. PC Class: integrated structure (three-point type)

It is a special switch for dual power supply switching, with a simple structure, small size, self-interlocking, fast conversion speed (within 0.2s), safety, reliability, and other advantages. It needs to be equipped with short-circuit protection appliances.

2. CB class: ATS equipped with overcurrent release

Its main contact can be switched on and used to break the short circuit current.  It comprises two circuit breakers and a mechanical chain, with a a short circuit protection function;  The controller is mainly used to detect the working condition of the monitored power supply (two channels).  When the monitored power supply fails (such as any phase break, undervoltage, voltage loss, or frequency deviation), the controller issues action instructions and the switch body automatically converts from one power supply to another with the load.  The capacity of the standby power supply is generally only 20% to 30% of the capacity of the commonly used power supply.

The ATS controller generally has the function of selecting non-important load.  The controller also comes in two forms: one consists of a traditional electromagnetic relay;  The other is digital electronic intelligent products.  It has the advantages of good performance, adjustable parameters, high precision, high reliability, and easy of use.

CB class and PC class ATS performance comparison

CB class is composed of circuit breakers, and the circuit breaker is to break the arc for any, requiring its mechanical should quickly trip.  Therefore, the mechanism of the circuit breaker has the problem of sliding buckle and buckle;  PC class do not have this problem.

The reliability of PC-grade products is much higher than that of CB-class products.  The circuit breaker does not bear the short-circuit withstand current, and the contact pressure is small.  When the power supply circuit is short-circuit, the contact is repulsed to produce a current-limiting effect, thus breaking the short-circuit current.

The PC-class ATSE should withstand 20Ie and above overload current.  The pressure of the contact is not easy to be repulsed, so the contact is not easy to be fused.  This feature is particularly important for firepower supply systems.  There is a power superposition problem in the conversion process of the two power supplies.

PC-class ATSE fully considers this factor.  The electrical clearance and creepage distance of PC-class ATSE is 180% and 150% (standard requirements). Therefore, PC-level ATSE security is better.

PC-class ATSE does not have a short circuit protection function, so it needs to be equipped with short circuit protection appliances. There are generally two types of short-circuit protection appliances, fuses or circuit breakers.

Because of its good current-limiting performance and strong ability to limit short circuit current, the fuse is often used in the system where the expected short circuit current is large.  The circuit breaker has poor current-limiting performance and low-rated short-circuit current-limiting capacity.

PC-class ATSE does not have a short circuit protection function, so it needs to be equipped with short circuit protection appliances.
